Today, it is easier to transform ideas into reality than it was ever before. To identify the ones that are going to be disruptive in nature is a question we should ask ourselves. Lets see what disruption means from an expert.
Harvard Business School professor and disruption guru Clayton Christensen says that a disruption displaces an existing market, industry, or technology and produces something new and more efficient and worthwhile.
I wanted to highlight this topic because most of us out there never know when a disruptive idea will turn into reality until we hear it on the news or through some other form of media. This article will tell you how to keep up with it.
Let us first look at some of the disruptive changes that have happened in the recent past.In India, I would say Uber and 3D printers are the perfect examples of disruptive ideas which have got other companies scrambling to review their own strategies. Uber has a major chunk of the market while 3D printing is relatively expensive now, once the adoption increases the prices will fall.
A couple of years back when Amazon launched as an online bookstore, it just had books!. It changed the way people bought books. Why was that?. It was because anyone could go online and buy them cheap and were available at your doorstep. Now they sell everything from stationery to providing storage on the cloud.
Now when I say how to keep up with it?, I am basically going to give you a few simple things that you can do so that you don’t miss out on what is happening out there. Whether you are an Entrepreneur, Enthusiast or an Angel investor, keep these things in mind.
- Grow your network.
- Join forums where people post ideas. Trust me they do exist. Just need to look in the right places.
- Find influencers and read their updates. That would keep you abreast of all the happenings in the industry.
- Attend all startup conferences that happen in your state and country.
- Join online funding sites, one of my favourites is the online platform called “Kickstarter”. A place where you can post your ideas and if people like your ideas they will pledge for it.
My two cents on this.
There are always going to be times when some companies really surprise us by doing the things they do. The intention behind this article is that you have an overall understanding of the potential disruptive ideas and how you can be a part of something that is bigger than all of us.
